About the work
Pietà sits within Gray Simpson’s exploration of tension, held through structure and time.
The composition draws on a familiar art historical reference. The act of one figure carrying another suggests care, weight and dependency, but it’s handled with restraint. The figures are present, but not fully resolved, held within a surface that feels worked and reworked over time.
The painting builds slowly. Layers of paint settle and shift, softening the image and allowing it to sit somewhere between clarity and uncertainty.
There’s a quiet weight to it. The physical connection between the figures carries the work, but it’s held without drama, contained rather than expressive.
What remains is a balance between control and vulnerability, where the image feels both constructed and fragile at the same time.
