About the work
Flex sits within Gray Simpson’s exploration of tension, held through structure and time.
The body acts as a framework, but it’s not fixed. It’s pushed, held and partially withheld, allowing the painting to sit in a state of pressure rather than resolution.
The surface builds slowly. Layers of paint accumulate and settle, giving the work a sense of duration, as if the image has been arrived at rather than imposed.
There’s a balance between control and instability. The figure is present, but never fully certain, held in place by the structure of the composition while the surface continues to shift.
What remains is a painting that carries tension quietly. Not dramatic, but sustained.
