About the work
Night Falling continues Richard Whadcock’s exploration of atmosphere through layered oil paint.
The surface is built slowly, allowing colour to deepen and settle. Darker tones gather across the upper half, while a band of light holds through the centre, suggesting a horizon under pressure.
There’s a sense of a landscape forming, but nothing fixed. The painting sits somewhere between land, weather and memory, with the surface carrying more weight than any single image.
It feels like a moment before or after a storm. Light pushing through, then receding. The title reflects that shift, as the work moves from presence into something more subdued and uncertain.
It holds tension quietly, revealing itself more fully the longer it’s sat with.
