About the work
Lake View continues Richard Whadcock’s exploration of atmosphere through layered oil paint.
The surface is built slowly, allowing colour to shift and soften over time. Light sits low within the painting, diffused through a hazy field, giving the work a quiet, suspended feel.
There’s a suggestion of water and distance. A darker form holds through the centre, reflected below, while the surrounding space remains open and unresolved.
Nothing is fixed. The image hovers between landscape and memory, more felt than described.
The work is calm, but not empty. It holds a sense of stillness, where light, reflection and atmosphere settle into balance.
