About the work

Leach sits within Richard Whadcock’s practice of building atmosphere through layered oil paint.

The surface is developed gradually through thin glazes, allowing colour to shift and deepen over time. Light appears to emerge from within the painting rather than sitting on top of it, creating a sense of depth that remains open and unresolved.

There is a subtle reference to landscape, but nothing fixed. The central form holds the eye, hovering between presence and dissolution, while the surrounding field remains soft and diffuse. A vertical line to the edge introduces a quiet tension, anchoring the composition without closing it down.

The work is less about image and more about perception. It asks for time, revealing itself slowly as layers of colour and light begin to settle.

What remains is a balance between control and release, where the surface carries the history of its making without becoming descriptive.
