About the work

Wella Hella continues Duncan Bullen’s exploration of line and repetition, with a subtle shift in tone through the use of silver and indigo pencil.

The surface is built through a repeated sequence of fine, measured marks that move across the page in a continuous flow. The indigo sits quietly within the structure, introducing a slight tonal variation rather than changing the language of the work.

Lines bend and gather as they move across the surface, creating areas of compression and release. What begins as a controlled system softens slightly, allowing a more fluid sense of movement to emerge.

There is no fixed focal point. The eye travels through the work, following its rhythm rather than settling. As with Bullen’s other drawings, the strength lies in its restraint. Small variations, carefully held, shape the overall composition.

It sits between precision and sensitivity, where repetition builds structure, and tone adds a quiet depth.

Wine pairing

To be officially paired on the 10th April by Henry at Butlers wine cellar
