About the work
Marta continues Abigail Bowen’s exploration of atmosphere through layered oil paint.
Built up through thin, fluid glazes, the surface holds a quiet depth. Colour shifts between warm golds and burnt tones against cooler greys and blues, creating a sense of light emerging and dissolving at the same time. The paint is allowed to move and settle, giving the work a natural softness rather than a defined edge.
There’s a stronger vertical pull here. Forms seem to gather and fall, suggesting movement without ever becoming fixed. Like much of Bowen’s work, it sits just beyond representation. Familiar in feeling, but not tied to a specific place or image.
The composition is held through balance rather than structure. Lighter passages sit centrally, while darker tones anchor the edges, giving the painting weight without closing it down.
It’s a work that reveals itself gradually. Less about immediate impact, more about atmosphere and the way the surface holds light over time.
