About the work

Azure Pools continues Richard Whadcock’s exploration of atmosphere, memory and surface through layered oil paint. Built slowly through translucent washes and subtle abrasion, the work seems to hover between landscape and abstraction, never fully settling into one or the other.

Fields of pale turquoise drift across the panel like suspended weather or reflected light, interrupted by delicate marks and darker linear gestures that quietly anchor the composition. The surface holds traces of revision and movement, allowing earlier layers to remain visible beneath the final image.

Rather than describing a fixed place, the painting suggests sensation and space. Areas appear to dissolve and re-emerge as the eye moves across the work, creating a sense of depth that feels both expansive and intimate.

What remains is a painting that rewards time: calm, restrained and quietly luminous, balancing precision with openness.

Paired with

Domaine des Carlines “Éclats du Jura” Chardonnay–Savagnin. Mineral, textured and quietly evolving. A wine that rewards time, much like the work itself.
