About the work

This work forms part of an ongoing series by Michael Rainsford exploring place through material.

Using local earth pigments and wax on paper, the surface is built from the landscape itself. Pigments are gathered, worked and applied directly, allowing the specific qualities of each location to remain present within the work.

The compositions are simple and contained, often structured in small fields or segments. Within this restraint, subtle variations in colour, density and texture begin to emerge. What appears minimal at first holds a quiet depth the longer it is viewed.

There is a direct connection between process and place. Rather than depicting landscape, the work carries it. The surface becomes a record of contact, where material, time and attention are held together.

This approach reflects Rainsford’s wider belief that earth matters, not as concept, but as a way of working. The work sits between observation and presence, where meaning is built through material rather than image.
